In March 2023, the Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency launched a quarterly newsletter for its external partners and stakeholders, entitled “Laulima,” a Hawaiian word that means “to cooperate and work successfully with others.” Laulima is one of HIEMA’s core values. Administrator James Barros chose the name to reflect the collaborative effort that is vital to protect Hawaiʻi against natural and human-caused hazards.
