Hurricane Douglas Nearing Maui, Coordination Continues Between Emergency Management Partners
HONOLULU —A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Maui County, along with O’ahu and Kaua’i. The latest outlook shows Hurricane Douglas was moving west-northwest near 16 mph, approaching Maui. According to the NWS, maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Douglas is expected to remain a hurricane as it moves through the islands.
Hurricane conditions are expected in portions of Maui County Sunday and will reach O’ahu Sunday afternoon, and Kaua’i and Ni’ihau by Sunday night. Tropical Storm conditions are imminent across portions of Hawai’i Island.
Hurricane Douglas is expected to generate heavy rainfall and large swells. Hawai’i residents and visitors are asked to take the following precautions:
- Continue to follow local reports for the latest information on Douglas
- Be aware of flood safety recommendations, tips can be found at floodsmart.gov
- Listen to ocean safety officials and exercise caution if entering the water as high surf messages are issuedHawai’i Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA), local emergency management and civil defense agencies, and federal and state partners are continuing coordination efforts with the National Weather Service (NWS) for Hurricane Douglas. This includes a briefing from NWS on expected impacts, the track of Douglas, and discussion of current and planned actions by the local and state emergency management agencies.
