Makani Pahili Exercise 2019

HONOLULU — The annual Makani Pahili Exercise began on Monday and is scheduled to run all the way until Friday, June 7, 2019.

Meaning “strong winds,” Makani Pahili is the State of Hawai’i’s annual hurricane preparedness exercise conducted by all four counties, as well as federal, private, and non-governmental organization stakeholders.

Monday’s workshop began with an Operational Coordination Seminar, followed by discussion-based exercises that were comprised of a Statewide Debris Management Workshop and a Situational Awareness Workshop.

The Department Operation Centers Activation Drill / Functional Exercise on Thursday will test state agency notification responses for departments’ emergency operations plans (EOPs).

Friday’s workshop will center on Senior Leader Activities facilitated by staff from the Naval Post-Graduate School. The Governor as well as the Mayors from each county and their respective County Emergency Administrators will be in attendance.

“These exercises are crucial to prepare for the response of our Islands during a catastrophic event,” said Thomas Travis, Administrator of the Hawai’i Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA). “It was gratifying to see all of our state and private partners take the time to participate in practicing our ability to respond, mobilize, and work with the community, before and after a crisis.”
