Tropical Storm Nolo Updates

Key Messages: As of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Tropical Storm Nolo is 310 miles south of South Point, Hawaiʻi with sustained winds of 40 miles per hour. A Hurricane Watch has been issued for Hawaiʻi County, meaning hurricane conditions with winds of 74 miles per hour or stronger are possible within 48 hours. Forecasters expect Nolo make its closest pass as a major hurricane south of Hawaiʻi Island on Saturday.

Hawaiʻi Island could see extreme rainfall with widespread totals of 15 to 20 inches, and isolated totals of 35 inches in southeast Hawaiʻi Island. Maui could see 5 to 10 inches of rain with isolated totals of 20 inches. Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi and Oʻahu could see up to 4 inches of rain and Kauaʻi up to 2 inches. Catastrophic flooding is possible on Hawaiʻi Island on Friday and Saturday with life-threatening landslides possible, especially in steep areas. Maui is also expected to experience dangerous landslides in steep terrain.

Recommended actions: Residents and visitors in the state of Hawaiʻi, especially on the Big Island and Maui, should review their family emergency plans, check emergency supply stock and prepare properties for flooding and damaging winds. Consider evacuating to a safer shelter, especially if you are in southeast Hawaiʻi Island. Prepare for power outages.
