Hurricane Lowell Updates

Key Messages: As of 11 a.m., Hurricane Lowell is a category 4 hurricane. Its center is located 615 miles south of Līhuʻe with maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour. Hurricane Lowell is moving west-southwest at 8 miles per hour and is expected to make a northward turn on Sunday. Until this turn, Lowell’s track remains uncertain, but there is a chance that the hurricane will pass close to Niʻihau and Kauaʻi on Monday and Tuesday.

Niʻihau, Kauaʻi and Oʻahu may experience extreme levels of storm surge and dangerous surf on southern and western exposed shores. Current forecasts suggest winds up to 95 miles per hour will be a worst-case scenario possible in Kauaʻi County, depending on storm track. Heavy rain and dangerous flash floods are possible depending on Lowell’s rain band development.

Across the state on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, there will be dangerous high surf and likely rainfall amounts of 5 inches with possible local rainfall of 10 to 20 inches.
