Key messages: Tropical Storm Lala is approaching the Hawaiian Islands and is forecast to impact Hawaiʻi Island between Friday night and Saturday morning, August 13-14, with tropical force winds, heavy rain, storm surge and rough surf. These storm impacts will likely progress to Maui Nui on Saturday morning; Oʻahu on Saturday afternoon and evening; and Kauaʻi on Saturday night. Rain, wind and rough surf could persist for all islands for many hours after onset, into Sunday.
Hazardous weather impacts are likely to include damaging winds over 74 miles per hour in some areas; heavy rainfall of 5 to 10 inches widespread, and up to 20 inches in local areas; life-threatening flash flooding and landslides resulting from rainfall; storm surge up to 3 feet impacting coastal areas, especially south-facing shores; and dangerous high surf and rip currents statewide.
Recommended actions: Prepare for heavy rain and flash flooding by clearing gutters and drains, and by raising valuable possessions off the ground. Prepare for strong winds by covering windows and glass doors, sealing gaps in doors and trim to prevent wind and rain entering, securing outdoor objects such as patio furniture and plants that could be blown by strong winds, and removing dead, damaged or overhanging tree limbs that may threaten your property. Stay away from beaches and coastal areas where rough surf and rip currents could sweep you away.
