BG Tyson Y. Tahara

Brigadier General Tyson Y. Tahara was born in Wahiawa, Hawai’i and graduated from Mililani High School in 1985. He graduated from The University ofHawai’i, at Hilo with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Teaching Certificate. He aIso graduated from the Air War College in July 2016 with a Master of Strategic Studies degree. He joined the Hawai’i Army National Guard in 1986 and completed Basic Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and the Power Generator Mechanic Course – 52D10 Advanced Initial Training Fort Belvoir, Virginia in the winter of 1986. He received his commission to 2L T through the University of Hawai’i, Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) in August 1992. His first assignment was a Petroleum Officer with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 29th Support Battalion.

Brigadier General Tahara held many other duty positions which included Supply Platoon Leader, A Company 29th Support Battalion; Commander, A Company, 29th Support Battalion; S4, 29th Support Battalion; Brigade Material Management Officer, 29th Support Battalion; S3, 29th Support Battalion; Executive Officer, 29th Brigade Support Battalion; Deputy Command Inspector General, Joint Forces Headquarters; Commander, 29th Brigade Support Battalion; Deputy G4, Joint Forces Headquarters; G4, Joint Forces Headquarters, Commander, 103rd Troop Command, and HIARNG Chief of Staff.

He has completed the Quarter Master Officer Basic Course, Quarter Master Officer Advanced Course, Support Operations Course, Combined Arms Exercise Course, Command and General Staff College, Inspector General Course, Logistics Commanders Course, and Senior Staff College.

Brigadier General Tahara previously deployed with the 29th Support Battalion as the Brigade Material Management Officer during OIF III and with the 29th Brigade Support Battalion as the S3 during OIF VIII.

BG Stephen Logan

Brigadier General Stephen F. Logan assumed his duties as the Assistant Adjutant General – Army, on December 6, 2019; and also serves as the Deputy Adjutant General for the State of Hawai’i, Department of Defense.

Brigadier General Logan deployed 2012-2013 as the deputy commander of the Operations Coordination Center – Regional Command South, Security Forces Assistance Advisory Team, Kandahar, Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM.

In addition to federal mobilization, Brigadier General Logan served on several state missions in support of local authorities. Most notable were his duties as the Title 32 Deputy Commander of Joint Task Force-50 in support of the Kilauea volcanic eruption and Hurricane Lane responses in 2018, and Dual Status Commander of Joint Task Force-50 in support of the recent Maui Wildland Fires in 2023.

He holds a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College and a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice from Chaminade University of Honolulu. He retired as a Metropolitan Police Lieutenant from the Honolulu Police Department and holds both military and civilian rotary and fixed wing qualifications. Throughout his career, Brigadier General Logan has flown the C-26, C-12, CH-47, OH-58, UH-I, MD500D and ND520N aircraft.

Brigadier General Logan’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the Master Army Aviator Badge, and the Honolulu Police Department Bronze Medal of Valor.

He is married to the former Darcie Imose and has two daughters, Naiya, and Karys.

BG Keith Tamashiro

Brigadier General Keith Y. Tamashiro assumed duties as the Assistant Adjutant General and Director of the Joint Staff for the Hawaii National Guard on January 15, 2014. He serves as the principal advisor to the Adjutant General and is responsible for assisting the Adjutant General in formulating, developing and coordinating all programs, policies and plans affecting the Hawaii National Guard and its more than 5,000 citizen soldiers. Additionally. General Tamashiro manages the military functions of the Joint Staff and is responsible for the joint military programs that pertain to the command, control, operation and implementation of contingency plans for domestic operations. General Tamashiro is certified as a Dual Status Commander.

General Tamashiro was commissioned as a Distinguished Military Graduate in the Field Artillery on June 10, 1984 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. He served on active duty from 1984 to 1988 at the 25th Infantry Division (L). In January 1989, General Tamashiro joined the 1st Battalion, 487th Field Artillery of the Hawaii National Guard. He served as a Battery Commander, Plans Officer, Battalion Fire Support Officer, BN S3, BN XO and as a Battalion Commander while deployed as part of the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon returning from the deployment, General Tamashiro was assigned as the Deputy Chief of Staff and then commanded two Major Subordinate Commands in the 298th Multifunctional Training Unit and the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. In his civilian job, General Tamashiro is the Unit Supervisor for the First-To-Work Program of the Department of Human Services assisting welfare recipients in obtaining employment and advanced schooling. He is married to the former Iwalani (Iwie) Kaninau of Wahiawa, Hawaii.

BG Bruce Oliveira

Brigadier General Bruce E. Oliveira assumed duties as Commander, Land Component Command for the Hawaii National Guard. He is responsible for formulating, developing, and coordinating all programs, policies, and plans affecting the Hawaii Army National Guard, ensuring the force is capable of executing global unified land operations and community based domestic operations.

General Oliveira enlisted in the Hawaii Army National Guard on August I, 1978. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant upon graduation from the Hawaii Military Academy in June 1980. General Oliveira has served in a variety of command and staff positions in the 29th Infantry Brigade and the 25th Infantry Division throughout his career. He was activated for federal service on 15 August 2004 and served as Deputy Commander, 29th Brigade Combat Team in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2004 thru 2006. In June 2007, he assumed duties as Commander, 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. On August 19, 2008, he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. serving as Commander, Task Force Lava Thunder responsible for 3,100 Soldiers from Arizona, Oklahoma, Samoa, Guam, Saipan and the five major Hawaiian Islands. General Oliveira assumed duties as Assistant Adjutant General – Army, Hawaii National Guard and the Director of the Joint Staff on June I, 2010. BG Joseph Chaves

Brigadier General Joseph James Chaves was born on February 26, 1951, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He began his military service in the Hawaii Army National Guard on August 2, 1970 as an enlisted soldier where he attained the rank of sergeant. He received his commission as a Second Lieutenant from the Hawaii Military Academy on August 17, 1973.

Brigadier General Chaves has held a variety of command and staff
positions within the Hawaii Army National Guard to include Chief, Post
Mobilization, HQ, ST ARC, HIARNG; Deputy Commander, 29th Separate Infantry Brigade; Logistic Officer, Headquarters, State Area Command, Hawaii; Battalion Commander, 297th Supply and Service Battalion; State Training Officer, Headquarters, State Area Command, Hawaii; 53, 29th Infantry Brigade (Separate); S3-Air, 29th Infantry Brigade; Commander, Combat Support Company, 1st Battalion, 299th Infantry; Communication-Electronic Officer, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 299th Infantry; Executive Officer, Heavy Mortar Platoon Leader, Anti-Tank Platoon Leader, and Scout Platoon Leader, Combat Support Company, 1st Battalion, 299th Infantry.

Brigadier General Chaves is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Infantry Mortar Platoon Leaders Course, Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Infantry Officer Advanced Course, Joint Firepower Course, Battle Staff Course, Joint Airspace Command and Control Course, Multifunctional Pre-Command Course, Infantry Officer Pre-Command Course, and the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Brigadier General Chaves is a 1994 graduate of the United States Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. He most recently completed
the National Guard Bureau’s Title 10/32 Joint Task Force Commanders Course at Northern Command, Colorado and the Joint/Coalition Forces Land Component Commanders Course at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania and Joint Chief of Staff Capstone Program, Fort McNair, Washington DC.

On April 1, 2006, Brigadier General Chaves assumed command of the Hawaii Army National Guard. He was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General on May 13, 2004. He previously served as the Commander of the 29th Separate Infantry Brigade. He was activated for federal service on August 16, 2004 and served as the Commander of the 29th Brigade Combat Team in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom 2004-2006. He received a Bachelor of Education degree in secondary education from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and Masters of Science degree in Computer Information Systems from the University of Phoenix. He graduated from the U.S. Army’s Professional Management for Executive Course in Overland, Kansas, in 1998 and the Office of Personnel Management Executive Development Seminar: Leading Change in Denver, Colorado in 2001. Brigadier General Chaves was formally certified by the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR).

Brigadier General Chaves currently is working full-time as the Director of Operations for the Marine Corps Logistic Base, Barstow, California.

BG Edward Correa

Brigadier General Edward L. Correa has served as the commander of the 29th Infantry Brigade (Separate) since August 1994.

General Correa was born in Hilo, Hawaii, and received his commission through the U.S. Army Armor Officer Candidate School in 1966. On active duty, he served with the U.S. Army Training Center, Armor (USATCA) in a variety of command and staff positions until 1969.

After active duty, General Correa assumed duties with the 29th Infantry Brigade from 1970-1976. His assignments included Inspector General; Assistant S-2 and S-3; and Commander, Troop E, 19th Cavalry. In 1976, he was assigned as the Senior Tactical Officer of the Hawaii Military Academy and reassigned as the Assistant Commandant in 1978. In 1980, General Correa served as the Mobilization Readiness Officer for Headquarters State Area Command. In 1983, he returned to the 29th Infantry Brigade as Executive Officer and transferred to Headquarters, State Area Command to serve as the G-2. In 1991, General Correa assumed command of the 103rd Troop Command and Deputy Commander, Hawaii Army National Guard. While in those assignments, he participated in Operation Iniki on Kauai.

General Correa’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, the Army Service Component Achievement Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Reserve Overseas Training Ribbon.

General Correa earned his doctorate degree from the University of Hawaii School of Law. He and his wife Johanna have three sons; Edward Jr. ( a guardsman), John, Michael, and two daughters, Angela and Mary.

BG Eugene Imai

Brigadier General Eugene S. Imai has served as the commander of the Hawaii Army National Guard since April 10, 1991. Prior to this appointment he was the Chief of Staff, HQ IX Corps (Reinforcement). He was born on August 19, 1945, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and the Reserve Officer Training Corps from the University of Hawaii in 1968. He began his career as an Adjutant General Officer. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Hawaii. General Imai’s military experience spans command and staff positions from company to corps level.

He has served in a variety of assignments both active and reserve. Personnel Management Officer, 6th US Army, Presidio of San Francisco, CA; Commander, 621st Adjutant General Company; Assistant Adjutant General, HQ IX Corps; Commander, 1085th Training, Exercise and Maneuver Group, and Chief of Staff, HQ IX Corps. He served one tour in the Republic of Vietnam as Manpower Control Officer, 1st Signal Brigade.

General Imai’s awards for peacetime and combat service include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service, National Defense Service Medal w/Star, Vietnam Service Medal w/4 Campaign Stars, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/hourglass, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon w/numeral 8, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal w/5 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Medal , Hawaii National Guard Medal for Merit, and State of Hawaii Active Duty Ribbon.

General Imai is the Senior Vice President for Administration, for the University of Hawaii. He and his wife Gail have a son, Gavin, and daughter Serina.
