The Hawaiʻi Air National Guard’s Launa ʻole recognizes the outstanding performance of Airmen. Launa ʻole means “without comparison” in Hawaiian.
The Hawaiʻi Air National Guard (HIANG) Launa ʻOle Awards represent one of the organization’s most enduring and prestigious traditions, celebrating Air Guard members whose performance is truly “without comparison,” the literal meaning of launa ʻole in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi.
The awards began in 1977 as an annual awards banquet designed to honor the outstanding contributions of HIANG personnel across a wide range of specialties, career fields and ranks. That inaugural event featured awards for categories including Outstanding Airman, Outstanding Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO), Outstanding Senior NCO, Outstanding Officer and Outstanding Unit, alongside special trophies such as the George R. Miki Memorial Trophy for excellence in air weapons control and the High Recruiter and High Team honors tied to recruiting achievements.
Throughout the late 1970s and into the 1980s, the Launa ʻOle Awards banquet became a highly-anticipated annual occasion, bringing together Air Guardsmen, their families and senior leaders in celebration of professional excellence and mission accomplishment. Winners were selected based on performance, leadership, initiative, technical skill, community involvement and contributions to the effectiveness and readiness of the HIANG.
Over the decades, the structure and categories of the awards evolved to keep pace with changes in the organization’s missions and force structure. The 2001 awards were renamed Launa ʻOle Awards which continue to honor the best of the best and now distinguished between full-time and traditional (part-time) Guard members.
The significance of the Launa ʻOle Awards lies not only in the accolades themselves, but in their role affirming the Hawaiʻi Air National Guard’s commitment to excellence, professionalism and community service. By formally recognizing individuals and teams whose performance sets a standard for others, the awards help foster morale, encourage continuous improvement, and illustrate the integral role the Guard plays in both state and national defense missions.
Today, the Launa ʻOle tradition remains a key annual milestone for the HIANG, continuing a legacy that stretches back nearly 50 years to its origins in the late 1970s and reflecting the Guard’s enduring mission and values.

Capt. Dobashi Wins ’78 Efficiency Award
By Dennis Fujii Associate Editor
HONOLULU. Hawaii – Captain Myron Dobashi. 150th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron. of Kauai. was awarded the James Y. Sato Memorial Award for 1978.
The James Y. Sato Memorial Award is presented annually to a Hawaii Air National Guard officer for hist her exceptional effort in improving the efficiency of his her unit and of the Hawaii Air National Guard.
Capt. Dobashi. an air weapons controller. is a guardsman with many personal attributes which have distinguished him in the selection for the coveted Air Guard award.
Lt. Col. Raymond Moriguchi, commander of the 150th AC&W, recently wrote a letter of recommendation for Dobashi. Moriguchi cites him as a leader with an abundance of initiative and drive. As a result of his actions, Dobashi has motivated and involved personnel to work harder in their duties and assignments.
His crew has developed into one of the best in operations. During a recent Air Force standardization evaluation visit, all personnel assigned to Dobashi’s air defense crew passed with excellent or outstanding scores. As a direct result of Dobashi’s personal counseling and assistance, personnel previously considered marginal on examinations passed without difficulty.
As a manager, Capt. Dobashi is resourceful and thrift conscious. During a shortage of qualified personnel, Dobashi was assigned additional duties which included security police officer. security manager, weapon explosive safety officer and civilian security guard supervisor. Normally, two officers are assigned to share these duties. The undertaking of these duties by Dobashi equated to a savings of about $3,000 in military pay for monthly drill and annual training periods for, the Air Guard.
Additionally, during an austere funding period imposed upon the Air Force civilian security section. Dobashi ingeniously used his Air Guard security section during the emergency to augment the security of the Kokee installation. The results of Dobashi’s actions saved approximately $200 for a four day period. But more importantly, it ensured the continuous security protection of the Air Guard’s Kauai installation.
One might ask, “With all his concerns for the 150th and its personnel, how is he doing as an individual officer of the Hawaii Air National Guard?”
As a result of his initiative and proficiency in all phases of air defense operations, he was recently upgraded to expert air weapons controller and was appointed officer in charge of a 24-hour air defense crew at the Kokee facility .
And how does the commander of his unit feel about Capt. Dobashi? In the closing comments of his letter of commendation, Lt. Col. Moriguchi reflected, “It is indeed a pleasure to have Capt. Dobashi in my organization, and I can truthfully say that I wish I had 10 more officers like him.

The Hawaii Air National Guard‘s topperforming Airmen and units were cheered on by a roaring audience on February 10, 2019, during the 2018 Launa‘ole Award ceremony at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
Dignitaries, family members and friends packed into the Hickam Officer‘s Club to show support for the nominees and congratulate the winners for their exceptional achievements over the past year.
During the opening remarks, Brig. Gen. Gregory S. Woodrow, 154th Wing commander, shared his appreciation for the accomplishments of the nominees and the wing-at-large. He also introduced the audience to the perpetual Kaleo Nui Award, which is presented to the unit which demonstrates the most spirit at the event. Kaleo Nui means “the loud voice”.
While the ceremony has been held annually for the past 43 years, it was officially renamed to Launa‘ole in 2001, meaning “beyond comparison” or “without peer.”
Prior to the announcements of the award winners, David Ige, Hawaii State Governor, stepped onto stage to express his gratitude as their commander and chief.
“I cannot tell you how proud you all make me feel every single day,” said Ige, “for all that you have done for our state and our country. This is one of the best events that I get to attend and I am really honored and privileged just to be here.”
Senior Master Sgt. Russell Mesinas, 154th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron

The HIANG held its annual Launa’ole Awards Ceremony to recognize its top performing Airmen for the year of 2024 at the Hollister Auditorium, a fitting venue to honor the dedication and excellence of the award recipients. This event celebrated the outstanding achievements of the organization’s full-time and drill-status guardsmen (DSG) who went above and beyond in their duties and contributions to the HIANG mission.
Launa’ole in the Hawaiian language means “without comparison,” embodying the spirit of excellence that the HIANG aims to foster in its Airmen. By recognizing the top performers, the organization acknowledges their exceptional work and encourages others to strive for excellence as well.
Leaders from all units of the HIANG gathered to celebrate the achievements of the top performers and to recognize each for their outstanding contributions. The ceremony was a way to show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of these Airmen, who are the backbone of the HIANG.
The significance of the Launa’ole Awards goes beyond mere recognition; it highlights the profound impact these individuals and competing nominees have had on their community and the nation’s wartime readiness. The recipients of these awards have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation, and commitment, contributing to the safety and security of the nation and fostering a stronger, more resilient community.
During the ceremony, Airmen were recognized in two categories: the full-time category and the DSG category. The full-time category recognized the top performers who were employed by the HIANG on a full-time basis, while the DSG category recognized the top performers who were part-time Guardsmen.
In addition to the individual awards, a traveling award called the Kaleo Nui Award was presented to the 154th Mission Support Group for delivering a high-spirited music video that incorporated vocal talent, unique choreography, and dance moves from all levels of the MSG, including that of its commander, Col. Glen Hayase. This award is presented to a unit or individual who demonstrates exceptional creativity and innovation in their work.
The ceremony is a testament to the HIANG’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and encouraging its Airmen to push themselves to be the best they can be. By recognizing their achievements, the HIANG is showing its appreciation for the Airmen who make its mission possible. The Launa’ole Awards serve as an inspiration, motivating all members to continue striving for greatness and ensuring the continued success and readiness of the HIANG and the community it serves.
