Drill Shed
1885 – Feb. 1st 1914
Constructed in 1885 during the reign of Kalākaua, the Drill Shed was originally built to house a battery of Austrian field artillery pieces the king had purchased. The building was reconditioned in 1893 for use by National Guard volunteers, improvements included installation of a wooden floor, electric lighting and additional company rooms.
However, by the early 1900s, the Drill Shed had started falling apart as the structure allowed rain and dust to blow in through its sides, damaging equipment and creating unsafe conditions. The War Department warned that no further equipment would be issued without proper storage facilities.
In 1903, the Territorial Legislature appropriated funds for new armories with $30,000 for Honolulu, but the project stalled due to the inability to secure a suitable site. The preferred location was the Drill Shed lot, but the U.S. retained title to the property and repeated efforts to reclaim the site failed.
By 1908, poor storage conditions had rendered the Guard’s rifles unserviceable, requiring replacement at federal expense. The War Department insisted on improved care but the Territorial Legislature refused further funding until a site was secured.
The impasse was resolved after the construction of U.S. Army installations, Fort Shafter, Fort Ruger, Fort DeRussy and Fort Armstrong, provided alternative facilities for federal troops. In 1910, the Legislature approved $100,000 for construction of a modern Honolulu armory, contingent upon return of the Drill Shed site. March 27, 1912, William Howard Taft signed an executive order transferring the lot back to the Territory. Construction began later that year and by Feb.1, 1914, the old Drill Shed gave way to a modern armory.
