Tsunami Technical Review Committee
Tsunami Program. Several important projects were completed in 2002. Local tsunami modeling for development of forecasting tools and installation of coastal recorders for damaging wave detection were completed this year. A tsunami safety brochure was also published for distribution to the general public. Projects are funded by the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program. The Tsunami Program also supported Tsunami Awareness Month in April 2002, participating in live television broadcasts for public school science classes statewide, and numerous community activities held throughout the period.

This committee was formed in 1998 to reduce the risk of tsunamis to the State of Hawaii. Comprised of scientists, engineers, land use planners, emergency managers, and public affairs personnel, the committee engages in tsunami hazard and risk assessments, emergency management and mitigation activities, and public awareness activities.

Tsunami Program. Several important projects were completed in 2003. Of importance was the Local Statewide Tsunami Exercise held on April 1, 2003. Key government agencies practiced their roles, responsibilities and procedures in response to a simulated locally generated tsunami event. An Emergency Alert System test was also conducted to validate the warning system between the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the National Weather Service.
