Brigadier General John E. Aiona Jr.
Posted on Jan 24, 2025 in HING History, PeopleBrigadier General Aiona entered the US Army in August 1944 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers in December 1945 upon graduation from Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
General Aiona joined the Hawaii Army National Guard in April 1947 and was assigned to the 227th Engineer Company. His assignments included those of company commander, battalion commander, a variety of staff positions, and command of both the 298th Field Depot and the 29th Infantry Brigade prior to his appointment as a Brigadier General and Commander of the Hawaii Army National Guard.
His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with one overseas bar, Armed Forces Honor Medal-First Class (Vietnam), Hawaii Army National Guard Commendation Medal with Silver Kahili Device, and Hawaii National Guard Service Medal.
