James E. Thomas, Jr., of Volcano, Hawai‘i, passed away in Hilo, December 3, 2019 at the age of 898. Born September 2, 1930 in Honolulu. He was a Roosevelt High School 1949 graduate. In 1950, he served as a Marine in the Korean War. He was a Purple Heart recipient and one of the few frostbitten survivors of the Chosin Reservoir battle. He also served as a Hawaii Air National Guard pilot.
In 1964, he moved his family from O‘ahu to Waimea, Hawai‘i Island, where he and his wife, Carolyn (Kennie), raised their four children, He worked in the food industry until retiring, and they moved to Volcano in 1992.
He is survived son, Michael (Diaana) Thomas of Volcano, Kimo Thomas of Waimea, daughter Carolyn Thomas of Kohala, and sister Lovette (Lala) black of Kawaihae. Other survivors include 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Private family service will be held at a later date.
