Happy Birthday to the 117th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment!

Check Six: 117th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

Today we honor 65 years of dedicated service, storytelling, and strategic communication from the 117th MPAD, a cornerstone of the Hawaiʻi Army National Guard since its federal recognition in 1960.

Originally the 117th Public Information Detachment, this trailblazing unit has grown from a local communications team to a globally deployed public affairs force. From historic firsts, to covering missions in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Panama, Korea, Poland and here at home during COVID-19 response and the 2023 Maui wildfires, the 117th MPAD has never stopped capturing history in the making.

Their work has informed the public, uplifted service members’ stories, and reinforced the vital bond between the military and the communities we serve. Whether producing broadcasts in combat zones or supporting civil authorities during crises, the Soldiers have done it all with professionalism, passion and purpose.

Here’s to the storytellers in uniform — past and present who’ve made the 117th MPAD what it is today. Your lens, your voice and your legacy continue to make a difference.
