In February and March of 1975, the Hawaii National Guard was called to assist at the Hawaii State Prison to restore order due to serious security and management issues. The Hawaii Army and Air National Guard worked together in a highly professional manner, conducting search operations, securing the prison, and providing necessary assistance. Over 810 Guardsmen were involved, including a task force composed of members from various battalions.

The prison had severe problems, including overcrowding, poor conditions, and corruption among staff, with inmates having access to contraband such as weapons and drugs. This was not the first time National Guard involvement was necessary, as similar interventions had occurred in 1973 due to disturbances and escapes. Legislative investigations revealed unsanitary conditions, inadequate training for guards, and poor leadership. As a result, new guards were trained, and the National Guard remained on duty until prison security was stabilized.

Throughout the operation, National Guard units discovered a large cache of weapons, drugs, and tools used by inmates to facilitate escapes and obtain contraband. This intervention was seen as a response to systemic issues within the prison that had led to repeated disturbances and insecurity.
