Check Six – 1940s: Honolulu International Airport / Hickam AFB

This undated photograph show the Honolulu Airport and Hickam AFB complex. It was probably taken in the late 1940s.
The terminal area was located next to Runways 22 R/L. The facilities were temporary buildings built by the Navy in the 1940s. The current Daniel Inouye International Airport went into service in 1962. Expansion construction continued into the 1970s.
You can see that Runway 8/26 does not extend into Hickam AFB. The Air Force completed its section of 5,417 feet of runway joining with 7,650 feet of HNL runway to form a continuous runway of 13,067 feet for instrument Runway 8-26 in May 1951.
Mission from the photograph is the Mamala Bay Gold Course. Construction on the military course took 18 months and opened in 1965.
