The 199th Fighter Squadron flew Republic P-47 Thunderbolts from the Hawaii Air National Guard’s inception in 1946 through the early 1950s. In 1954, the squadron entered the jet age when they began flying the North American F-86E Sabre and Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star (also known as the T-Bird).

The 199 FS flew the F-86Es until 1958 when there was a transition to the F-86L Sabre Interceptor. The F-86Ls and the T-33s were replaced by the F-102 Delta Dagger in 1961.
