MILILANI, Hawaii – Times Supermarket Mililani supervisor Byron Iha received a Department of Defense Patrio Award June 22 in recognition of continued support provided to his employee, Sgt Genavi Pablico, Hawaii Army National Guard. The award was presented by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) volunteers, Bridget Komine and Kary Krohn.

Pablico wrote in her nomination narrative, “He was supportive of any and all Guard duty. He managed to fill in while I was away and not once made me feel bad for my military service. I’ve had past employers who weren’t very supportive, so it was great to have his support. He was even supportive of me being a temporary technician (temporary full-time with the Hawaii Army National Guard) while working there.”

On congratulating Iha Komine stated, “I explained that ESGR is a DOD program with 4,500 volunteers nationwide whose primary purpose it is to encourage cohesive relationships between civilian employers and their employees that serve in the National Guard & Reserve components. Guardsmen & Reservists can’t do what they need to do to perform military service without a solid foundation provided by their families and their employers.  This award is not for a company or a corporation, but for a specific supervisor that provides support. Sgt. Pablico nominated you as a patriotic employer, as a way to thank you for your support of her service.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. For more information about ESGR outreach programs or volunteer opportunities, call (800) 336-4590 or visit www.ESGR.mil.
