Walk in The Country
Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i hosted its 21st annual Walk in the Country August 19 at Lanikuhonua in Ko ‘Olina where guests enjoyed a luau, wine tastings and a silent auction.
The Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii mission is to inspire young people to become responsible citizens. Their role is to create a safe place for kids to grow, mentor keiki by having a professionally-trained staff and caring volunteers, nurture character development and life-enhancing skills, and provide hope and opportunity.
John Penebacker retired as a colonel from the Hawaii Army National Guard several years ago. He was a M-Day Soldier who worked many years for the State of Hawaii, heading the Library System.
John served with the Air Force at Hickam AFB on active duty. He was a star in the military basketball league. After his discharge, he enrolled at the University of Hawaii, Manoa.
John Penebacker, along with Bob Nash, Jerome “Hook” Freeman, Al Davis, and Dwight Holiday — nicknamed the “Fabulous Five” — ignited local interest in University of Hawaii basketball during the 1970-71 and 1971-72 seasons. The team won 47 of 55 games over the two-year period — a spectacular record for a program that had managed just one winning season and 81 total victories in its first 27 seasons. UH basketball became the hottest sport ticket in town, and interest was so high that games were televised live for the first time.
