Check Six: Fort Ruger

Posted on Oct 27, 2015 in 1900's, Check Six

Many Hawai‘i National Guard retirees still refer to the Guard headquarters on Diamond Head Road as Fort Ruger. Many of the young Guard members do not know the history about the Fort Ruger area and its part in Hawaiian history.

Two of the Fort Ruger gateposts still remain and define some the Fort Ruger area. Two rock wall gateposts remain where Monsarrat Avenue transitions into Diamond Head Road. The guard post often has graffiti in spite of community clean up efforts. The other gatepost is at the entrance to the Hawai‘i National Guard headquarters
