Labor Day is an American federal holiday observed on the first Monday of September since 1894 by President Cleveland, that celebrates the economic and social contributions of American workers.

It also symbolizes the end of the summer and start of school after Labor Day, and is celebrated with picnics, barbecues, parties, firework displays, parades, art events, water sports and other athletic events.

Oregon become the first state to make Labor Day an official holiday in 1887, followed by Illinois in 1891.
