Check Six – January 1996: 154th Support Group Training Bulletin

The following items were in the “In My Opinion” column in the January 1996 issue of the 154th Support Group Training Bulletin.  Ranks and unit designations are as they were in 1996. 

Lt Col Gervin Miyamoto, a Traditional Guard member served as the 154th Wing’s Executive Officer.  He took a leave of absence from his Honolulu Police Department job to take over the State Department of Defense’s Drug Interdiction Program. He succeeded LTC Arakaki, who has successfully led the program for several years.

During the UTA weekend, there was the dedication of the 154th Wing’s new Motor Pool/AGE Facility. The two shops had worked in their old cramped facilities that were part of the original Wing compound.

Maj Ann Greenlee, who served as the 154th Wing’s Social Actions Officer, started her new position as the military personnel officer at Headquarters, Hawai‘i Air National Guard.  She filled the position held by Capt Randy Tom before he left for a tour at the Air National Guard Readiness Center, Andrews AFB. Maryland.

The Hawai‘i Army National Guard hosted the Annual Hawaii National Guard Fun Run & Walk at Bellows AFS in Waimānalo.

Governor Ben Cayetano appointed Lt Col Jerry Matsuda as the Deputy Director of the State Department of Transportation.  Jerry was the commander of the 154th Civil Engineer Squadron, and served as the Engineering Officer of State Department of Defense’s engineering office as a state employee.

The planning for the Annual HIANG Awards Banquet continued.  The banquet held at the Hale Koa Hotel recognized Guard members nominated their commanders for the various awards.

TSgt Joyce Arakaki, who served as the Wing commander’s secretary, retired.  She had worked for several years at the Headquarters, 201st Combat Communications Group prior to taking the 154th Wing position.  Joyce joined her husband, LTC Don “Rock” Arakaki, who had recently retired from the Hawai‘i Army National Guard.  Don went on to serve as the senior instructor at the Junior ROTC program at Wai‘anae High School.

The 154th Logistics Squadron hosted a retirement party for Lt Col Willson Sakai, the retiring commander. Prior to this assignment, he flew as a weapons systems officer in the F-4C Phantoms assigned to the 199th Fighter Squadron. The well attend party was held at the Pearl Country Club.
