The Hawaii Army National Guard soldier killed in an aircraft accident in eastern Afghanistan on Friday, has been positively identified as Sgt. Drew M. Scobie, of Kailua.   Sgt. Scobie was one of three Americans aboard the MC-12 surveillance aircraft that crashed.  There were no survivors.  Sgt. Scobie’s remains were flown to Dover AFB, Delaware, where positive identification was made.  His remains are expected to arrive in Hawaii in the next several days.  Funeral arrangements are pending.

Sgt. Scobie was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion/487th Field Artillery in Wahiawa.   Sgt. Scobie was a Fire Direction Operator for the artillery battalion.  He had volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan with Det. 55, which is currently providing reconnaissance and surveillance for International Security Assistance Forces in Afghanistan.

Det. 55 was mobilized on Oct. 8, 2013 and deployed to Afghanistan later that month. This was his first deployment.

Sgt. Scobie is survived by his wife (McKenna) and son (Duke), parents, and many extended family members.  The family has asked for more time to grieve and is asking the media to respect their privacy.  The family has appointed the Hawaii National Guard Public Affairs Office to take all media queries.

Maj. Gen. Darryll D.M. Wong, state adjutant general, and other staff members have met with the family.  “Our hearts go out to the Scobie family.  They are obviously a very tight-knit Ohana and are still devastated.  The Hawaii National Guard is doing everything it can to assist McKenna and the entire family in their time of need”.
