In fact, it’s Associated Press journalist Peter Arnett, going through HANG’s orientation on F -4 Phantom escape procedures. Arnett was in Honolulu as part of a series of news stories he plans to write on the National Guard. While in the islands, Arnett had an opportunity to fly in a Phantom, tour HANG facilities and talk to Guard members. Arnett was a Vietnam war correspondent and won Pulitzer prizes for his work.

The zoo’s eight-year old hippo hadn’t been feeling too well lately. She’d lost 150 pounds in the past year, 50 in the last two months, and wasn’t quite up to her usual activities, like basking in the Hawaiian sun, rolling in the mud, and swimming in her hippo pool.

Nope, the Guard members, most of whom are Hawaii Military Academy candidates, didn’t win – but they did run a good race and helped a good cause.
The Guard members pushed a bed sponsored by KSSK-K59 radio and the Kapahulu Senior Center.

Rich certainly hopes so. Anguay is a black belt karate instructor who has been using his skills to aid in his recruiting efforts at Aiea High School. This exhibition for an appreciative audience of 400 featured Anguay against a dozen of his friends and pupils.
He teaches karate at Aiea High, using the opportunity to establish a rapport with the students. Once the personal relationships are developed, Anguay has an easier time convincing students of the benefits of Army Guard membership
Troop E defeated the 298th Engineer Detachment team by a score of 41-40. Taking third place honors was the 487th Field Artillery B team which won by default over the 297th Supply and Service Battalion.
The answer is yes – but only for a day. That was the day the cast and crew from CBS’ new hit television show, Magnum P. I., used the department’s main buiding to film a segment of the show.

Magnum P. I. also used a Hawaii Army National Guard Cobra helicopter for an episode. The Cobra was piloted by Capts. Gary Hara and Clifford N. Flores.

Courage and Bravery to soldiers or the Combat Support Company, 1st Battalion, 299th Infantry, Hawaii Army National Guard, on August 20, 1984. The men were cited for their heroism on December IO, 1983, when they rescued a possible rape victim at Diamond Head Crater Park and chased the suspect about a mile before capturing him on 22nd A venue. The CSC was conducting a training session In the crater at the time of the inc.ident. Attending the award ceremony were: Spec. 4 Brian Hirose, 1st Lt, Mark Logan, Col.
