KANEOHE- With the recent announcement involving internments levied through the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration, committal services and accompanying military honors at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery at Kaneohe will restart on Tuesday, June 9, 2020. Only direct internments were allowed for the last two and a half months to comply with social distancing mandates and to adhere to the 10-person or less rule for public gatherings. Furthermore, the Department of Defense restricted travel of military honors details to neighbor islands and suspended detail operations where more than 10 people would be gathered.
State Veterans Cemeteries will continue to adhere to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by limiting the number of individuals attending committal services, practicing physical distancing, ensuring all attendees wear face coverings, encouraging hand washing with soap or the use of hand sanitizer and asking sick individuals to stay home. Families may continue to choose direct internment and opt for a memorial service later when restrictions have been lifted.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as we restart these important functions that were suspended to comply with COVID-19 social distancing mandates. Please contact the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery administration office should you have any questions at 369-3575.
