Maj. Gen. Alexis T. Lum Biography
Major General Alexis T. Lum was appointed the Adjutant General for the State of Hawaii in March 1983. In this capacity, he is a member of the Governor’s cabinet and serves as the Director of the State of Hawaii Department of Defense, the military commander of the Hawaii Army and Air National Guard, and the Director of State Civil Defense.
He is a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. His military career spans more than 44 years and began when he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945. He attained the rank of Sergeant and served until 1947.
General Lum attended the University of Hawaii and majored in civil engineering. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry on June 1, 1950 through the ROTC program. He was ordered to active duty in April 1951 and upon his release joined the Hawaii Army National Guard in May 1953. He served in numerous infantry and engineer command and operations positions.
He was ordered to active duty in May 1968 with the activation of the 29th Infantry Brigade and served in Vietnam as the executive officer of the 31st Engineer Battalion. Following his return from Vietnam, General Lum served in various positions in the Headquarters Installation Command, one of the major commands of the Hawaii Army National Guard, and eventually became its commander. In January 1980 he was assigned as the Commander, Hawaii Army National Guard, and was federally recognized as a Brigadier General in March 1981.
In civilian life, General Lum was employed from 1954 to 1982 as the facilities engineer and deputy public works officer at the Naval Ammunition Depot, Lualualei, which is now the Naval Magazine Lualualei.
He is the recipient of numerous military awards which include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and other U.S. and foreign decorations.
General Lum is married to the former Leimomi Mookini of Kohala, Hawaii. They have three children: Angela, Alexia, and Oliver.
