Command Sgt. Maj. Brandon Kumalae

Command Sergeant Major Brandon I. Kumalae is a native of Hilo, Hawaiʻi. He enlisted in the Hawaiʻi Army National Guard in December 1999 as an Administrative Specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 299th Infantry. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major on 11 June 2021.  

His current assignment is the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for the Hawaiʻi National Guard. His previous assignments include Command Sergeant Major, 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, G3 Sergeant Major for the Hawaiʻi Army National Guard, Command Sergeant Major, 1st Squadron, 299th Cavalry Regiment, J3 Sergeant Major for the Hawaiʻi National Guard, and all leadership positions from Team Leader to Command Sergeant Major within the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. 

Command Sergeant Major Kumalae’s deployments include Operation Iraqi Freedom (04-05), Operation Enduring Freedom (12-13), and Operation Joint Guardian (18-19). Additionally, he has supported multiple National Guard Civil Support missions within the state and numerous named exercises within the United States Indo-Pacific Command region.

His military education includes the Nominative Leader Course, Sergeant Major Course Class 46 Non-Resident, Battle Staff NCO Course, and Joint Task Force Commanders Training Course.

His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (2OLC), Army Commendation Medal (4OLC), Army Achievement Medal (4OLC), Army Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, and other service and campaign ribbons. He is a member of the Order of Saint Maurice and the Order of Saint George.

He is married to Chany, his wife of 20 years.
