Born September 5th 1882 Pomena, California

Died July 7th 1938 Honolulu, Hawaii

Hayward arrived in Hawaii in 1910 to work for the Hawaiian star, and after it amalgamated, he was employed by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin from 1912 to 1928. He was Vice President and General Manager from 1921 to 1928.

At the time of his appointment as Adjutant General he was Commanding Officer of the 2nd company, 1st Battalion, Hawaii National Guard. He apparently continued his work with the Star-Bulletin while serving as Adjutant General as in his resignation he stated it was not “possible to do justice to my employers and the Guard.”

He was active in Boy Scouts serving as commissioner from 1914 to 1922. He was also on the Board of Governors for the Shriners hospital.

In 1928 he resigned from the newspaper and organized his own insurance company which he was still operating at the time of his death.
