History of the 1st Battalion, 487th Field Artillery
Posted on Jan 16, 2025 in HING History, UnitsThe Battalion’s lineage reaches as far back a 1893 where its parent unit constituted the Hawaii National Guard’s 1st Regiment. Subsequent organizations inherent to the 1st Battalion, 487th Field Artillery also includes the 1st Hawaiian Infantry, 1918; 298th Infantry, 1924; assigned to the 25th Infantry Division, 1941; and 24th Infantry Division, 1942; reorganized as the 298th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion, 1957.
Converted to the 487th Artillery, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System, to consist of the 1st Battalion, an element of the 29th Separate Infantry Brigade, 1965. On 13 May 1968, the unit was inducted into active Federal service, and reverted back to State control on 12 December 1968. Reorganized as the 487th Field Artillery on 1 May 1972.
As of 2014, the unit was reorganized and designated as the 1st Battalion, 487th Field Artillery, a Fires Battalion in its current organization as follows: Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, Battery A, Battery B, Battery C, and Company F (FSC), 29th Brigade Support Battalion. Campaign participation credit includes: World War II, Central Pacific, two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF III and OIF VIII), and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel including the Meritorious Unit Commendation award.
Unit Insignia

Description
“A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Per fess enhanced Argent and Azure in chief a representation of Diamond Head Sable issuant from base overall a Hawaiian warrior holding in dexter hand a spear palewise of the last wearing a feather cloak Or charged with crescents of the third and a feather helmet Gules a border of the like. Attached below the shield a Silver scroll inscribed “HIKI NO” in Blue letters.
Scarlet is the color for Artillery organizations. Participation by the unit in the Hawaiian Rebellion of 1895 is indicated by the Diamond Head, where one important engagement occurred. The Hawaiian warrior commemorates the ancient warrior, King Kamehameha I, who founded the Hawaiian Kingdom.
Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 227th Engineer Battalion on 27 July 1962. It was re-designated for the 487th Artillery and amended to change the color of the border on 1 March 1966. The insignia was re-designated for the 487th Field Artillery Regiment on 24 July 1972.”
