Honor Roll: 29th Infantry Brigade, Operation Enduring Freedom

2007-2008

On January 16, 2007, the Brigade’s 1st Battalion, 158th Infantry was mobilized and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Staff Sergeant Charles Browning

Company B, 1st Battalion, 158th Infantry Regiment, Arizona Army National Guard

Staff Sergeant Charles Browning was born on March 6, 1976, in Whidbey Island, Washington. He attended high school in Tucson, Arizona. Staff Sergeant Browning worked for the Arizona Department of Corrections and was proud of his service with both organizations (Arizona National Guard and the Department of Corrections). He first enlisted in the Army and served stateside at Fort Drum, New York and Fort Campbell, Kentucky; he also completed tours in Panama and Korea. Staff Sergeant Browning served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 158th Infantry.

Staff Sergeant Browning died of wounds suffered when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Mchtar Lam, Afghanistan.

Staff Sergeant Browning is survived by his wife Lisa and two stepdaughters.

Private First Class Mykel F. Miller

Company B, 1st Battalion, 158th Infantry Regiment, Arizona Army National Guard

Private First Class Mykel F. Miller was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. He lived there until he graduated high school in 2006 after which he joined the Arizona National Guard as an infantry soldier. Private First Class Miller was a member of 3rd Squad, 3rd Platoon, Company B, 1st Battalion, 158th Infantry and a member of the Provincial Reconstruction Team Qalat.

Private First Class Miller was killed in action when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device during a ground assault convoy.

He is survived by his mother, stepfather, and two younger brothers.

2012-2013

Sergeant Eugene M. Aguon

Company E, 1st Battalion, 294th Infantry Regiment, Guam Army National Guard

Sergeant Eugene M. Aguon was killed May 16, 2013 when a vehicle born improvised explosive device was used to attack their convoy while traversing the streets of Kabul, Afghanistan. He was part of the Task Force Guam made up of about 600 soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 294th Infantry regiment. The task force was working under the NATO Training Mission Afghanistan International Security Assistance Force Command.

Specialist Dwayne W. Flores

Company E, 1st Battalion, 294th Infantry Regiment, Guam Army National Guard

Specialist Dwayne W. Flores was killed May 16, 2013 when a vehicle born improvised explosive device was used to attack their convoy while traversing the streets of Kabul, Afghanistan. The task force was working under the NATO Training Mission Afghanistan International Security Assistance Force Command.

2013-2014

Sergeant Drew M. Scobie

Headquarters & Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 487th Field Artillery Regiment

Sergeant Drew M. Scobie was born on November 28, 1988, in Kailua, Hawaii. He enlisted in the Hawaii Army National Guard in March 2005 as a Field Artillery Automated Fire Control Specialist and served with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery 1st Battalion, 487th Field Artillery. Sergeant Scobie further attended training to become a Counter Radio Electronic Warfare Operator and was assigned as an Electronic Warfare Sergeant. He was often recognized by his command for his technical and technical expertise in digital systems. August 2003 Sergeant Scobie volunteered for deployment to Afghanistan with Detachment 55 Operational Support Airlift Command as an Aerial Sensor Operator in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sergeant Scobie succumbed to his injuries sustained during a fatal aircraft crash at Bagram Airfield Afghanistan which occurred on January 10, 2014.

Sergeant Scobie leaves behind his wife McKenna and son Duke. He is survived by his mother Karen, father Darryl, sister Devan, brother Jack, stepbrother Austin, and stepsisters Portia and Sarah.
