Interstate Transfer

If you are a member of another State’s Army National Guard and plan to move to Hawaii, you don’t have to stop your service in the National Guard. You may be able to request an Interstate Transfer (IST). An IST is where a National Guard service member can transfer from any State or Territory to the Hawaii Army National Guard.

The process of an IST requires the service member to obtain a conditional release memorandum from their commander (aka “90-day memo) which allows them 90 days to work with the IST Coordinator to find a new unit in Hawaii. The Hawaii IST Coordinator will then provide to the service member a Letter of Acceptance, which will have their new unit information. This process can take up to 90 days and it is very important that the service member complete this before they physically move to Hawaii.

Please contact your State’s IST Coordinator, who is usually assigned to your State’s Recruiting and Retention Battalion. The IST Coordinator will then work with Hawaii’s IST Coordinator to find you a great unit in Hawaii to drill with and continue your military service.
