Kūkāʻilimoku
The Kūkāʻilimoku, the official newsletter of the Hawaiʻi Air National Guard’s 154th Wing, began as a publication of the 199th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron in September 1957. Created to keep Airmen informed and connected, the newsletter shared unit activities, policies, military and community news, and information important to squadron personnel. Its name was selected through a contest in the first issue, with Staff Sgt. Arthur Lee of the Engineering Section submitting the winning entry and receiving a $5 prize. The name was announced in the October 1957 issue.
Over the decades, Kūkāʻilimoku grew alongside the Hawaiʻi Air National Guard, evolving from a squadron newsletter into a publication serving the wider organization. Its enduring purpose reflects the importance of communication, camaraderie and shared identity among Hawaiʻi’s Airmen. Today, the publication preserves the history and traditions of the Hawaiʻi Air National Guard while continuing to share the stories of its members and mission.
