Ten years ago today, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. In response to the disaster, the Hawai‘i Air National Guard (HIANG) deployed personnel and resources to assist with humanitarian relief operations.
The 204th Airlift Squadron conducted multiple C-17 Globemaster III missions, delivering vital disaster relief supplies. Among these missions, the aircraft “The Spirit of Kamehameha” and its HIANG and active-duty crew were part of the first wave of support to Nepal.
In parallel, the 109th Air Operations Group deployed a 12-member team to Nepal, providing on-the-ground command and control for incoming cargo flights and supporting overall humanitarian efforts which brought in more than 34,000 pounds of relief supplies to the affected regions.
