Happy 55th Birthday to the 230th Engineer Detachment, Hawaii Army National Guard!

Today, we celebrate a remarkable 55 years of service, dedication, and excellence. Originally designated the 298th Engineer Detachment upon its founding on April 1, 1970, the detachment has a rich history of supporting both local and global missions with outstanding skill and unwavering commitment.

From its early years at Kokohead to its relocation across the islands, the detachment’s impact has been felt in Hawaii and beyond. Through the 1970s and 1980s, the unit contributed to major community projects like the renovation of Diamond Head Monument Park and the restoration of Mokauea Island fishing village. The Soldiers efforts in disaster response and environmental preservation set the foundation for the outstanding reputation they continue to hold today.

As the 298th Engineer Detachment evolved into the 230th Engineer Detachment in 2007, it embraced a new focus on vertical construction support, but their mission to serve their community and nation never wavered. The Unit’s deployment to Afghanistan in 2005-2006 for Operation Enduring Freedom was a testament to their ability to overcome challenges and complete critical infrastructure projects, such as the Tarin Kowt Road, under demanding conditions.

Through the years, from disaster relief during Hurricane Iniki to supporting construction projects in the Philippines and Cambodia, the 230th Engineer Detachment has continually demonstrated their versatility and resilience in times of need. They were instrumental in the building of alternative housing for the Kahauiki Village Homeless Relocation project near Sand Island. The Soldiers have supported Hawaii’s recovery after the Kilauea eruption and built micro-homes in Pahoa and provided assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, proving their adaptability and readiness to serve in any circumstance.
