Brigadier General Bruce Oliveira, the Land Component Commander recently announced several Hawai‘i Army National Guard (HIARNG) senior command and key staff assignment changes.
Colonel Bryan Suntheimer, the currently HIARNG Chief of Staff, will become the Mobility Assistant, Director, Logistics, Engineering and Security Assistance (J4), United States Pacific Command (PACOM). He replaces Brigadier General Martha Wong, who has retired. COL Suntheimer promotion to brigadier general will take place shortly after he assumes his new position on October 1, 2013.
Colonel Stephen Logan, will assume command of the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT). This will be his M-Day assignment and he will continue as the State Army Aviation Officer (SAAO) as a technician.
Colonel Kenneth Hara, the current 29 IBCT commander and just back from his Afghanistan deployment, will become the Chief of the Joint Staff. The change of command ceremony will be in January 2014, but COL Hara will start his transition to new assignment on October 1, 2013.
Colonel Arthur “Joe” Logan, the Chief of the Joint Staff, will be the next HIARNG G3 Branch, Plans, Operations & Training Officer starting October 1, 2013.
Colonel William “Rusty” Spray will be the new HIARNG Chief of Staff when he returns from his assignment with the 8th Army (Korea) in January 2014. In the interim, Colonel Robert Lesher, the current HIARNG G1, will serve as the Chief of Staff.
Two officers are trading assignments. Colonel Stanley “Ed” Toy will become the Deputy Commander of the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT). Lieutenant Colonel Moses Kaoiwi, Jr., the current brigade deputy commander, will assume duties as the J3 Director of Operations & Military Support (DOMS). These new assignments will begin in January 2014.
Colonel Keith Tamashiro remains the Assistant Adjutant General – Army. In his position, he also serves as the Director of the Joint Staff. COL Tamashiro is a M-Day soldier who works for the State Department of Human Services. He has a promotion certificate and will pin on his star in the next several months.
