HING History Update: Hurricane Iniki Response

The Public Affairs Office was recently received a request for information on the hurricane Iniki response in 1992. We spent a week going through the archives and were able to find some great photos with and without captions, news articles, and stories written in the old annual reports, Kukailimoku, and Pupukahi. 11 SEP 1992 When Hurricane Iniki struck, Hawaii experienced the worst storm ever to strike the islands. All islands were touched by the storm, but Kauai felt the full impact as the eye swung directly over the island. The adjutant general led a joint county, state and federal relief and recovery effort in which more than 5,000 Guard soldiers and airmen participating. Operation Iniki was the greatest peacetime mobilization and deployment operation ever conducted by the Hawaii National Guard. Battalion aid stations were established and Medics went house-to-house to treat injured residents. The National Guard set up and operated relief distribution centers, providing food, water, and plastic sheeting. “Operation Garden Sweep” a massive, two-phase clean-up of the entire island was a joint county, state, and federal effort. The workers collected and hauled more than 32,000 tons of garbage and debris to the landfill.
