Retiree News History

Retiree News began on March 20, 2006 as an email to several Hawaii Air National Guard retirees who needed information about an upcoming organizational event. The email included comments about several HIANG retirees.

We received positive feedback and requests for more emails with similar information. We received emails from many retirees asked to be added to the distribution list. Apparently the addressees on the first email shared it with other retirees. The number of readers grew as more informational emails were sent out.

The email format evolved to a newsletter format. Along the way, Hawaii Army National Guard retirees and Guardmembers from other states became readers.

After six years and 127 email issues, Retiree News stopped for a number of reasons. At that point, there were over 1,600 readers on the email distribution list.

Retiree Newsthe website version – started on January 22, 2013. The site began very simply, but more features were added as the site evolved. We recently passed 1.75 million views – moving toward two million. Retiree News continues to provide benefit and other information to National Guard retirees, current members and community friends.

We hope you like the Retiree News website. Please spread the word to others who you think might be interested in Retiree News.

Retiree Newsthe website version 2.0 – Aloha! Maj. Gen. Kenneth Hara asked his Public Affairs Office to revive Retiree News because of the value it had. Retiree News was a connection between the past and current times.

Veterans and retirees who served in the Hawaii National Guard built the legacy that we enjoy today. All of the federal missions, state activations, Guard personalities and achievements and so much more were captured and shared in the Retiree News.

Many of the former posts by Galen Sakumoto were preserved on this new iteration on our State of Hawaii, Department of Defense (HIDOD) website. We have removed some of the dated posts about news, health issues, outside organizations, and unrelated to HIDOD. Because we are a state government site, we cannot appear to endorse anything specific or appear biased in any way.

We have kept all of the former unit posts, historical facts, and HING specific events. There are multiple ways to search for and find old posts that you remember and want to see again.

The new Retiree News posts will be published when they become available. There may be some busy weeks and some slow, but we will share more HING history, upcoming events, recent promotions / retirements / awards, veteran resources, news, and more. We are open to suggestions and want interaction from you.

Please email any comments to [email protected]. The volume of emails may delay responses.
