Celebrating 388 Years of Service: Honoring the Legacy of the National Guard

Posted on Dec 13, 2024 in Webmaster Comments

Today marks a historic milestone — the 388th birthday of the National Guard, the oldest continuously operating military organization in the United States. This is a moment to honor a rich heritage, reflect on achievements and renew the commitment to the mission of serving and protecting our communities, states and nation.

On Dec. 13, 1636, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the first citizen-soldiers gathered to form militia units, laying the foundation for what would eventually become the National Guard. These early patriots embodied the spirit of service and readiness that remains at the core of the National Guard’s mission today. Unique in its dual role, the National Guard serves both state and federal needs, providing essential support in times of natural disasters, civil emergencies and military conflicts across the globe.

Gen. George Washington, commander of the Continental Army, famously said, “When we assumed the Soldier, we did not lay aside the Citizen.” This powerful statement captures the essence of the National Guard — citizen-soldiers who balance civilian careers with military service, demonstrating exceptional dedication, resilience and patriotism. The National Guard’s history is defined by its unwavering commitment to the defense of our nation. Guard units have been involved in nearly every major conflict since the American Revolution and maintain a presence in support of military operations worldwide today.

In addition to their military duties, the National Guard is a vital part of our national emergency response. Whether responding to hurricanes, wildfires, floods or pandemics, the National Guard lives up to its motto: Always Ready, Always There. Today, the National Guard continues to make an impact on the global stage. Through the State Partnership Program, Guardsmen are deployed to 115 partner nations, strengthening alliances, fostering stability and reinforcing our nation’s security.

The success of the National Guard is a testament to the extraordinary men and women who serve, their families who support them and the employers who stand behind them. To all Guardsmen, past and present: Your courage, dedication and selflessness are an inspiration. You are the backbone of our national defense and exemplify the true meaning of service.

As we celebrate this 388th birthday, honor the sacrifices and accomplishments of those who came before us, and reaffirm our commitment to carrying their legacy forward. Together, we ensure the National Guard remains a beacon of strength, service and resilience for generations to come.

Happy Birthday, National Guard!
