Retiree Update
A fellow retiree asked if I could cover the HIANG organization. If you have been retired to any length of time, you probably have lost track of the wiring diagrams and the cast.
Let me start with HQ HIANG. The Headquarters is still located on Diamond Head Road. There is talk about the headquarters moving. I think I’ll be retired from this State job before that happens – but then I have been wrong many times in my life.
The HIANG Commander is Maj Gen Darryll Wong. He came t to the HIANG after serving in the Air Force. He initially was in fighter maintenance. He later returned to flying as a tanker pilot in our 203d Air Refueling Squadron. His next assignment was the Director of Operations at HQ HIANG. His follow-on assignment was the Chief of Staff.
The current Chief of Staff is Brig Gen Kathy Berg. Dr. Kathy Berg is a professor at the University of Hawaii. She served most of her career as a comm officer in the 201st Combat Communications Group. Her spouse is a HIANG retiree, Maj Steve Berg, who served with the 169th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron. Dr. Steve Berg is a mathematics professor at Hawaii Pacific University.
The Director of Operations is Col Mike Compton. “Inch” is back working with the “Red Guys” after doing several years of active duty with the HIANG. He did a super job as the point person for our C-17 startup.
The new Deputy Director of Operations is Lt Col Willie Benton. “Pirate” was the commander of the 203d Air Refueling Squadron prior to taking this position. When you see him, ask Pirate about his Samoa trip….
Serving in the Executive Support Staff Officer (ESSO) position is Col Ann Greenlee. Ann previously served in a similar position with the 154th Wing. Think the ESSO title just went to Director of Support
Maj Sharnell Valleho holds the personnel position at the Headquarters. She came from active duty and served in supply prior to taking the fulltime personnel job. She is still a Kaimuki gal at heart.
Lt Col Reynold Hioki fills the Command, Control, Communications, Computer (C4) position. An AF Academy graduate, he started with the HIANG in the 201st Combat Communications Group prior to moving to the Headquarters.
More Retiree Updates
Did you see HIANG retiree Col Clint Churchill’s photo in the paper recently? Besides still working at the James Campbell Estate, and flying his stunt plane, Church is the president of the Pacific Aviation Museum board of directors. The museum just broke ground on the renovation of hangers on Ford Island.
Another retiree photo I saw was on Col Wayne Wakeman. Wildman’s photo was on the Tiny Tadani page in the Advertiser. He works for a company called Mortgage Free Americans.
