National Guard Kids: Mission Possible

Highlights the perseverance, responsibility, and problem-solving skills National Guard youth demonstrate every day. Whether navigating a parent’s deployment, supporting their family during missions, or balancing school and home life, they continue to rise to the occasion. With strong support systems and community connections, National Guard kids prove that every challenge can be faced and every mission is possible.

April holds a special place in the heart of the military community: it’s Month of the Military Child, a nationwide observance dedicated to honoring the courage, adaptability, and resilience of military-connected children and youth. This month recognizes the sacrifices military keiki make alongside their parents who serve across the globe, military keiki face challenges unique to military life and they do it with strength and heart. Challenges such as extended separations during state, national and global missions, shifts in daily routines, and increased responsibilities at home, all of which shape their experience.

Military families are not only defined by service, they are defined by support, unity and resilience. In the Hawaiʻi National Guard, the commitment to military keiki goes beyond a month, it’s year-round. The Hawaiʻi National Guard Child and Youth Program provides a broad range of services designed to help families and keiki thrive through all phases of military life.

This program supports families across the islands by:

  • Providing engaging youth activities such as overnight and day camps, STEAM events and academic exploration days.
  • Connecting families with community resources and support agencies for mental health, education and family well-being.
  • Offering skill-building and developmental opportunities that help Guard keiki grow socially, academically and emotionally.

Whether it’s helping keiki by offering safe spaces to connect with peers, or simply giving families support through life’s transitions, the Child & Youth Program lives the spirit of the Month of the Military Child every day.

In Hawaii, where ‘ohana and kuleana are at the heart of community life, this observance resonates deeply. By celebrating military keiki this April and supporting them beyond, we reinforce their value, affirm their experience, and help ensure every keiki connected to service has the tools and encouragement to thrive.

Let’s celebrate and continue to support the young heroes who stand with our Soldiers and Airmen, today and every day!
