The Honolulu Star-Advertiser recently posted this photograph as part of their \u201cBack in the Day<\/em>\u201d daily series of old photographs. The photograph was originally published on November 17, 1964 and the caption was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Royal Guard of monarchy days stands inspection outside Iolani Palace on the first anniversary of the resurrection of the Guard by members of the Hawaii Air National Guard. Governor John A. Burns, front, reviews the troops. The uniforms are the same as those worn in monarchy days, and all commands are given in Hawaiian.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The reviewing party is led by Governor John A. Burns<\/strong>, followed by Kapena Moku Theodore Hussey<\/strong>, Maj Gen Robert Stevenson<\/strong>, Brig Gen Valentine Siefermann<\/strong>. Royal Guard members in line (L-R) are: Anthony Bissen<\/strong>, George Wela<\/strong>, Paul Kealoha<\/strong>, Calvin Mann<\/strong>, Lester Ing<\/strong>, and Samuel Saffery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colonel Walter \u201cPapa\u201d Judd<\/strong>, a Hawaii Air National Guard member, organized the current Royal Guard in 1962. The unit made its first public appearance on November 16, 1963 at Iolani Palace to commemorate King David Kalakaua\u2019s birthday. The unit has posted the guard at the palace every year since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
