{"id":6862,"date":"2022-09-09T10:43:28","date_gmt":"2022-09-09T20:43:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dod.hawaii.gov\/hiema\/?p=6862"},"modified":"2026-05-01T14:14:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T00:14:11","slug":"news-release-hawai%ca%bbi-emergency-management-agency-shares-lessons-of-iniki-video-to-mark-30th-anniversary-of-hurricanes-landfall-on-kauai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dod.hawaii.gov\/hiema\/news-release-hawai%ca%bbi-emergency-management-agency-shares-lessons-of-iniki-video-to-mark-30th-anniversary-of-hurricanes-landfall-on-kauai\/","title":{"rendered":"NEWS RELEASE: Hawai\u02bbi Emergency Management Agency Shares \u201cLessons of Iniki\u201d Video  to Mark 30th Anniversary of Hurricane\u2019s Landfall on Kaua\u2018i"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friday, Sept. 9,2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Release No. 2022-036<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HONOLULU<\/strong> \u2013 Thirty years ago this weekend \u2014 on Sept. 11, 1992 \u2014 Hurricane Iniki made landfall on the island of Kaua\u02bbi as a Category 4 hurricane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To commemorate the event, the Hawai\u02bbi Emergency Managment Agency (HI-EMA) has released a short documentary video sharing the \u201cLessons of Iniki,\u201d shared by some of the people who responded to and were affected by the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iniki caused more than $3 billion in damages \u2013 an amount that would be more than $6 billion today with inflation. Parts of the state had no electric power for weeks, and tens of thousands of people were driven from their homes by the damage. Rebuilding took years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Story Continues Below<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iCw2EyXnTFs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iniki reshaped many of the ways we think about hurricanes in Hawai\u2018i: from how to warn the public and how to build structures, to how to clear the roadways and protect against future damage. In some ways, it laid the groundwork for building more resilient communities here in Hawai\u2018i.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Iniki was a long time ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memories fade, and it\u2019s easy to become complacent about the hazards we face here in the middle of the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And with a warming climate increasing the danger of extreme weather around the world, HI-EMA asked the question \u2014 What lessons did Iniki teach us, and do we still remember those lessons?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survivors we interviewed talked story about those difficult times, and moments of humor and joy as well. Among the themes that emerged:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The importance of timely and accurate information for public safety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The need to make a plan and stock emergency supplies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The way the aloha spirit of Hawai\u2018i strengthens communities and connects neighbors who take care of each other when emergencies strike.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video, releasing during National Preparedness Month, is posted on HI-EMA\u2019s website and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/iCw2EyXnTFs\">YouTube channel<\/a>.
