Members of Hawaii’s Army and Air National Guard recently participated in a 3 day cyber range exercise at University of Hawaii. The exercise called Po‘oihe which means “Tip of the Spear“ in Hawaiian consisted of teams of cyber warriors from Active duty Army and Air Force, University of Hawaii, Idaho State Univ, and Guardsmen from California. This years exercise included major support from Idaho State Univ. National Information Assurance Training Education Center (NIATEC) who supplied servers, programs and manpower which totaled around three thousand man hours. Hawaii’s Adjutant General, Major General Darryl Wong compared the Cyber Range to exercises like Red Flag where pilots and air crews prove their training and skills. The scenario for this years Po‘oihe required the teams to set up and maintain an emergency operations center while undergoing malicious cyber attacks after a major natural disaster had taken down most of the states information technology infrastructure
