Jones arrived in Hawaii about 1892 and is listed in the city directory 1892 -1893 as a shorthand reporter, Supreme Court. He continues to be listed in a court stenographer and reporter until 1910, when he is listed as Adjutant General until 1915.

During President Harding’s term of office he was appointed Collector of Internal Revenue for Hawaii and left that office after Coolidge became president. In the final years of his life he was engaged principally as a searcher of records and land title.
