Hawaii residents were fortunate to escape serious damage following the Tohoku Japan tsunami on March 11, 2011. There was some localized flooding, but it was nothing compared to the loss of life and property in Japan. Nearly 16,000 residents were killed when the tsunami hit, and 2,500 are still counted as missing.
